examine:

The majority of your life is run by your Default Mode Network.

The DMN is the brain network active when you are not consciously task-focused — when you are driving, washing dishes, exercising, lying in bed.

It governs:

your self-narrative

your habitual beliefs

your identity

your internal replay loops

your interpretation of social dynamics

your sense of who you are in relation to others

Most people believe they are consciously choosing their life.

In reality, you are running pre-installed software.

And that software was coded:

by parents,
by school systems,
by cultural reward structures,
by religion,
by praise,
by punishment.

I had built a high-functioning, extraordinary life by 37, all on an unexamined operating system.

Perfectionism.
Performance.
Loyalty without question.
Mind over body.
Achievement over alignment.

My default mode network replayed the same unconscious script:

Be good.
Be exceptional.
Be needed.
Do not disappoint.

That script ran while I was succeeding.

It also ran while I was emerges:

Chronic, unresolved stress.

Not just situational stress.

But sustained internal pressure.

And this is where the conversation usually becomes superficial.

Because “manage stress” becomes the recommendation.

Meditate more.
Exercise more.
Relax more.

But that still does not answer:

Why is the stress there?

Stress as Internal Conflict

Stress is not only what is happening around you.

It is what is happening within you.

A more precise definition:

Stress is the physiological and psychological cumulative load created
when there is a gap between what you know is true
and how you are living.

This shows up in subtle ways:

You know you need rest—
but you push through.

You know something is misaligned—
but you stay.

You know what needs to be said—
but you remain silent.

These are not isolated moments.

They accumulate.

Micro Self-Betrayals

Most people think of stress as major life events.

Deadlines.
Finances.
Health scares.

But what actually shapes the system over time are micro-moments.

The subtle ones.

Where you override yourself.

Where you dismiss your own signal.

Where you choose external expectations
over internal truth.

This is where the internal fracture begins and builds.

You experience:

A knowing.
A signal.
A subtle contraction or pull.

And then—

you do something else.

That gap creates dissonance.

And dissonance, repeated over time, becomes chronic stress.

Can you start to see the missing foundational layer of true prevention?

We will dive deeper into this exploration in the True Whealthness® community emails.

I will share how this length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

Sensitivity is not fragility.

Sensitivity is precision.

And precision is what separates excellence from harm.

In my years as an endovascular neurosurgeon, sensitivity was not optional.

Endovascular neurosurgery means treating blood vessel problems of the brain from within the body — minimally invasively.

We would enter through the artery in the leg, travel over 100 centimeters through the vascular system, navigating upward into the arteries of the brain.

All through vessels measured in millimeters.

Using coils.
Stents.
Microcatheters.

Devices so small that a fraction of a millimeter matters.

Let me ground this in specific examples:

***The typical microwire used for majority of treatments is sized 0.014in = 0.36mm.

***The inner diameter of a delivery microcatheter for a larger sized intracranial stent is 0.027in = 0.68mm.

In this space, micro-movements are not theoretical.

A subtle shift of the wrist.
A slight loss of tactile feedback.
A moment of inattentiveness.

These can mean the difference between recovery and permanent debilitation.
Between life and death.

In that operating room, sensitivity is revered.

It is trained.
It is respected.

It is necessary.
It is celebrated.

Without sensitivity, a patient dies.

Without sensitivity, a patient may survive — but with profound disability.

There is no debate in that environment about whether sensitivity is valuable.

It is obvious.

So here is the deeper question:

Why do we prize and protect sensitivity in the brain —
but dismiss it everywhere else?

The truth is: the body is sensitive.

All of it.

Relationships are sensitive.
Organizations are sensitive.
Cultures are sensitive.
Communities are sensitive.

Human systems are as nuanced and responsive as neural tissue.

Yet outside of medicine, sensitivity is often mislabeled.

Too soft.
Too slow.
Too emotional.
Too complicated.

And so what do we do instead?

We numb.
We desensitize.
We override.

We prioritize speed.
Efficiency.
Scale.
Productivity.
Bottom lines.

We flatten nuance.
We categorize.
We label.

We generalize.
We pathologize.

And in doing so, we lower the standard.

Not all at once.

But microscopically.

Just as a micro-movement within a cerebral artery can create catastrophic consequence, small acts of desensitization accumulate.

Microaggressions compound.
Integrity erodes.
Standards slip.

Excellence becomes negotiable.

Mediocrity becomes tolerated.

Dishonesty becomes rationalized.

Relationships become transactional.

Humanity becomes robotic.

All in the name of efficiency, productivity, and quantity.

<a made impossible to ignore:

Sensitivity is not optional if the outcome matters.

When we ignore nuance, when we steamroll complexity, when we dismiss the micro and the nano in favor of scale and generalization, we do not become stronger.

We become crude.

And crude systems eventually collapse under the weight of what they refused to feel.

Sensitivity is not weakness.

It is intelligence operating at high resolution.

It is the capacity to perceive what is subtle before it becomes catastrophic.

It is the discipline to attend to what others dismiss as “minor.”

A return to sensitivity is not regression.

It is a return to excellence.

To hold elevated standards requires the willingness to feel the micro.

To notice small deviations before they compound.

To honor complexity rather than bulldoze it.

This applies in medicine.
In business.
In leadership.
In parenting.
In governance.
In culture.

When sensitivity is trained, integrated, and honored, outcomes improve.

When sensitivity is numbed, dismissed, or mocked, standards deteriorate.

And deterioration always begins at the smallest level.

The micron.
The nanometer.
The nuance.

The future will not be secured by more force.

It will be secured by more precision.

And precision requires sensitivity.

The same level of reverence we hold for the brain — we must extend to the body of society.

Because without it, we do not elevate.

We decay.

<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" After all, businesses need customers.

But when persuasion becomes the default lens through which information is filtered, something subtle begins to erode:

Neutrality.
Objectivity.
Trust.

What I Mean by “Microaggressions”

The term may sound provocative.

I use it intentionally.

A microaggression is not an overt attack.

It is subtle.

Repeated.

Small enough to be dismissed individually — but cumulative in effect.

Marketing microaggressions operate in the same way.

They rarely lie outright.

Instead, they:

Highlight benefits while minimizing risks

Present selective data without full context

Use emotionally charged language to bypass critical thinking

Reinterpret scientific findings through a persuasive lens

Blur the line between evidence and opinion

Individually, each instance may seem trivial.

Collectively, they distort truth and perception.

Where This Becomes Dangerous

In scientific and clinical research, neutrality is foundational.

Studies are designed — at least in principle — to:

report benefits

report risks

clarify limitations

disclose conflicts of interest

specify statistical significance

define scope and applicability

Data is meant to be evaluated, not sold.

But once that same data enters a marketing funnel, the lens shifts.

Risks become footnotes.
Limitations disappear.
Nuance is collapsed.
Headlines become exaggerated.

Especially in the health and wellness industries.

This is where the microaggressions compound.

A clinical trial might show modest improvement in a narrow population under controlled conditions.

Marketing reframes it as:

“Proven breakthrough.”
“Backed by science.”
“Clinically validated.”

Without clarifying:

In whom?
Under what conditions?
Compared to what?
At what magnitude?
With what trade-offs?

And slowly, misinformation spreads — not necessarily because the data was false, but because it was reframed for persuasion.

The Cost of Constant Persuasion

When every message is crafted to influence you, .you may become subtly on guard.

Or worse — subtly conditioned.

You stop asking:

What is being omitted?
What incentives are driving this framing?
What is the full picture?

And when enough microaggressions accumulate, something larger happens:

Trust erodes.

Not just trust in companies.
Not just trust in industries.

Trust in information itself.

Society becomes saturated with curated claims, influencer interpretations, and optimized messaging.

Discernment becomes not optional — but essential.

<a class="image-link it often operates in spaces where:

regulation is minimal

evidence standards are looser

emotional vulnerability is higher

outcomes are subjective

scientific literacy varies widely

In such an environment, marketing can easily outpace rigor.

And when wellness claims are wrapped in selective neuroscience, loosely interpreted clinical trials, or vague “research shows” language, the illusion of objectivity deepens.

But illusion is not neutrality.

And persuasion is not the same as truth.

Why This Matters

This is not an argument against marketing.

It is an argument for consciousness.

The more saturated our environment becomes with persuasive messaging, the more responsibility falls on the individual to cultivate discernment.

To ask:

Is this education — or conversion?

Is this data — or framing?

What would the full, neutral presentation look like?

What incentives are shaping this message?

Because neutrality is rarely profitable.
But it is foundational to trust.

How Persuasion Actually Works (And Why It Matters)

Most people believe they are immune to marketing.

They are not.

Modern persuasion is sophisticated — informed by behavioral psychology, neuroscience, data analytics, and algorithmic testing.

Here are some of the most common marketing techniques used to persuade you and bypass your critical thinking:

1. Authority Signaling

Using phrases like:

“According to neuroscience…”

“Harvard study reveals…”

“Doctor-recommended…”

The presence of institutional or scientific language triggers credibility — even when the data is loosely interpreted or selectively presented.

The authority cue often substitutes for scrutiny.

2. Selective Citation Bias

Only the positive outcomes of a study are highlighted.

Limitations, weak effect sizes, small sample populations, and contradictory findings are omitted.

The data may be technically accurate — but incomplete.

Incomplete truth is distortion.

3. Social Proof Amplification

“This sold out in 24 hours.”
“Thousands have transformed.”
“Everyone is switching to this.”

Human beings are wired for belonging.
When something appears widely adopted, the psyche relaxes into conformity.

But popularity is not proof.

4. Scarcity Framing

“Last chance.”
“Only 3 spots left.”
“Doors closing tonight.”

Scarcity activates urgency and bypasses deliberation.

It shifts you from evaluation mode into reaction mode.

5. Emotional Activation Before Information

Marketing often opens with:

Fear.
Pain points.
Identity triggers.
Aspirational imagery.

Once emotionally activated, the critical thinking centers of the brain are less engaged.

Emotion is not the enemy.

But emotion preceding evidence can distort judgment.

6. Reframing Risk as Optimization

Instead of acknowledging trade-offs, messaging often reframes them as “upgrades.”

Side effects become “detox symptoms.”
Discomfort becomes “breakthrough.”
Doubt becomes “resistance.”

Risk disappears into narrative.

7. Identity-Based Persuasion

“You’re the kind of person who…”
“High performers choose this.”
“Conscious leaders don’t settle.”

When products are linked to identity, declining them can feel like self-betrayal.

This is powerful — and rarely neutral.

8. Data Without Context

Percentages are presented without baseline comparison.

“Reduces symptoms by 40%”
But from what starting point?
In what population?
Against what alternative?

Relative numbers sound dramatic. Absolute numbers often tell a quieter story.

9. Influencer Authority by Association

A public figure endorses a product — often without expertise in the domain.

Familiarity becomes credibility.

Visibility becomes assumed knowledge.

10. Algorithmic Reinforcement

You see the same claim repeatedly.

Repetition increases perceived truthfulness.

This is known as the illusory truth effect.

Something repeated enough begins to feel factual.

The Cumulative Effect

This is how microaggressions accumulate:

Not through dramatic deception.
But through subtle, consistent influence and persuasion.

None of these techniques are inherently evil.

They are tools.

But when tools of persuasion are layered repeatedly across industries — especially in health, wellness, and personal development — neutrality of information erodes.

And when neutrality erodes, mistrust rises.

The Question Is Not “Is This Legal?”

The deeper question is:

Is this neutral?
Is this balanced?
Is this intellectually honest?

Would the same message stand if stripped of emotional activation, authority cues, scarcity framing, and selective citation?

That is the test.

The Deeper Cultural Pattern

We are now living in a persuasion economy.

Algorithms reward engagement.
Influencers reward visibility.
Brands reward conversion.

Microaggressions of persuasion and influence multiply, forming the new structure.

And structural distortion is harder to see — because it becomes normal.

Your brain is now exposed to thousands of micro-influences per day.

Neutrality is less clickable.

Nuance is slower.

Complexity is harder to scale.

A Return to Intellectual Integrity

Guarding your brain and mind today requires more than skepticism.

It requires literacy.

Scientific literacy.

Statistical literacy.

Psychological literacy.

Marketing literacy.

It requires understanding how persuasion works — so you can detect when it is operating.

It requires being willing to tolerate complexity rather than defaulting to the cleanest headline.

It requires a willingness to tolerate nuance.

Because nuance does not convert well.
But it preserves truth.

Because once neutrality erodes, perception becomes shaped by whoever frames most effectively.

And that is not the same as whoever is most truthful.

Thank you for reading More Than Neurosurgeon. This is a reader-supported publication. length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

There is a quiet cognitive dissonance embedded in the modern use of the word neurotypical.

It assumes something that neuroscience, in its current stage of development, cannot actually prove:

that there is a standard, normative way for a human brain to be.

The field of neuroscience is still in its infancy.

For all we have mapped, imaged, categorized, and labeled, we are only beginning to understand the depth and complexity of human neural, biological, and physiological systems.

To claim that there is a single “typical” configuration of human cognition or behavior is premature at best — and conceptually flawed at worst.

The Problem With Controlled Science

Scientific studies are designed to control variables.

That is the point.

Control for age.
Control for co-morbidities.
Control for environmental factors.
Control for confounding variables.

The goal is clarity and reproducibility.

But here is what is rarely acknowledged:

When you control for variables, you create an artificial environment.

And artificial environments are not the real world.

I know this intimately from bringing innovative medical devices into surgical use for the brain.

Even the most rigorous clinical trials are conducted under optimal conditions.

Optimal patient selection.
Optimal surgical teams.
Optimal monitoring.
Optimal compliance.

These trials determine safety and efficacy under ideal parameters.

But once a device or therapy enters the real world, those optimal conditions no longer exist.

Patients are more complex.
Contexts are more variable.
Human factors are less predictable.

Real life is not a controlled study.

And the performance of an intervention in the real world is rarely identical to its performance in a trial.

This is not a failure of science.

It is a limitation of methodology.

From Data to Dogma

The same methodological constraint applies to behavioral neuroscience.

We study groups.
We generate averages.
We define norms.

From those norms, we construct categories.

From those categories, we construct diagnoses.

And from diagnoses, we create identity.

Somewhere along the way, “statistical average” becomes mistaken for “healthy,” “correct,” or “normal.”

But statistical normalcy is not the same as biological truth.

A consensus reality can be built from controlled data.

But consensus is not the same as truth.

Consensus reflects agreement.

Truth reflects reality — in all its complexity, variability, and nuance.

The Fallacy of Neurotypical

Consensus reality is useful.

It organizes systems.
It allows institutions to function.
It helps with insurance billing, educational frameworks, and clinical shorthand.

But consensus is agreement.

Truth is reality.

And reality is far more complex than consensus categories.

To declare a neurotypical way of being is to assume that deviation from statistical average is inherently aberrant.

But human nervous systems are shaped by:

genetics

environment

culture

trauma

nutrition

relational experience

education

intensity of lived experience

social structure

stress exposure

and countless variables we do not yet know how to measure

The human brain is not a static organ.

It is dynamic, adaptive, and relational.

There is no stable baseline human.

There is only adaptation.

To call one adaptation typical is to center a statistical majority and label everything else deviation.

But deviation from what?

From an average constructed under constraints.

To compress variability into a binary — neurotypical versus neurodivergent — may serve administrative systems, educational structures, and insurance coding.

But it does not necessarily reflect biological truth.

It reflects consensus.

And consensus is often designed for efficiency, categorization, and social organization — not for honoring complexity.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" with truth, something subtle happens.

People begin to measure themselves against an artificial construct.

If you do not fit the norm, you are told you are atypical.

If you struggle within a system built for statistical averages, you are told something is wrong with you.

But what if the system is built on incomplete models?

What if the variability we call divergence is not pathology — but expression?

The human brain was never meant to be standardized.

Neuroscience is still in its infancy and will continue to evolve.

Our tools will become more refined.
Our imaging more sophisticated.
Our models more complex.

But humility must remain.

Because the brain is not just an organ to be mapped.

It is embedded in lived experience.

And lived experience cannot be fully replicated in a laboratory.

What the Label Really Does

When we create the category “neurotypical,” we implicitly create a hierarchy.

Even if we pretend we do not.

One becomes baseline.
The other becomes divergence.

And when systems are built around the baseline, those who fall outside of it are required to adapt.

Adapt to schools.
Adapt to workplaces.
Adapt to social norms.
Adapt to productivity standards.

And when adaptation is painful, exhausting, or destabilizing, the individual is told something is wrong with them.

But what if nothing is wrong?

What if we are witnessing the natural spectrum of human neural diversity being squeezed into narrow corridors of social efficiency?

What if the discomfort is not pathology — but friction against an artificial norm?

A Return to Precision and Humility

None of this is a rejection of science.

Science is a powerful language for understanding the material world.

But it is a language with limits.

Especially when applied to something as complex as human identity and behavior.

If we are serious about excellence in science, then we must also be serious about intellectual humility.

We must stop pretending that averages define identity.

We must stop confusing statistical frequency with biological correctness.

We must stop constructing hierarchies from incomplete data.

The danger is not in neuroscience.

The danger is in prematurely solidifying evolving data into fixed identities.

It is in mistaking controlled conditions for universal truth.

It is in assuming that consensus equals reality.

Neuroscience is not complete.
It is not final.
It is not absolute.

It is a developing map.

And maps are not the territory.

The Invitation

Before accepting a label — whether applied to yourself or someone else — ask:

Is this biological truth?
Or is this consensus

care,

attention,

devotion,

dedication,

heart,

and soul you put into the work.

People often ask, “How many years have you been in your profession?”

That’s usually the first layer of assessment.

But as a neurosurgeon, I’ve learned that this question barely touches the reality of experience.

In neurosurgery, years are more like dog years.

And particularly for vascular neurosurgeons, we spend far more hours per year in the hospital than most professions do on the job, and much of that time is spent taking care of patients in situations where the stakes are life and death.

Over time, I came to realize that experience is not simply a function of years or hours.

It is primarily a function of intensity.

By intensity, I mean the level of care, thoughtfulness, and devotion required

— the degree to which heart and soul are present in the work.

When I consider these elements honestly, my career as a neurosurgeon feels equivalent, in lived experience, to what many people might accumulate across an entire lifetime in their profession.

Four years of medical school.
Seven years of residency + fellowship.
Followed by ten years of independent practice.

That’s twenty-one years in medicine.

And at least half of this time was spent under conditions of sustained intensity that are unheard of in most professions.

What do I mean by that?

Majority of my time spent in medicine was shaped by taking call

— often 24/7 for at least 7 days straight.

Being responsible through the night.

Through exhaustion.

Through emergencies that could not wait.

This was not occasional.

It was consistent.

Imagine a profession where this level of responsibility is a regular part of life

— where you must remain

ready,

clear,

and precise

no matter how tired you are, because someone else’s life depends on it.

There is no partial presence in this reality.

<a In the course of everyday life there, I learned something that is now widely accepted and normalized there:

household appliances are only built to last for a few years.

It is understood — without much protest — that appliances are built with cheaper materials and designed for failure.

When something breaks, the cost of repair routinely exceeds the cost of replacement. This isn’t limited to small items.

It applies to refrigerators, ovens, stovetops, and other major appliances.

Replacement has become easier than repair.

And as I was describing this, I felt a deep frustration rising. Because once you step back, a larger question becomes unavoidable:

What happens to all of those discarded materials?

How can this level of constant turnover possibly be sustainable — especially for islands, and ultimately for the Earth as a whole?

In response, my financial planner shared something he had learned in business school that explains this.

There is a formal business strategy taught and normalized called planned obsolescence.

In this model, companies analyze where profit can be optimized — calculating the cost of creation, the expected lifespan of the product, maintenance costs, and the projected revenue. Products are then designed to fail at a specific point where profitability is maximized.

Durability is not the goal.
Longevity is not the goal.
Mastery of materials is not the goal.

Deterioration is intentionally built in.

And once you see this, you can’t unsee it.

It shows up in appliances.
In vehicles.
In phones and laptops.

Across nearly every category of modern consumption, products are no longer created for mastery, craft, and integrity — they are created for profitability via built in deterioration.

If you step back and look at the cumulative impact, the implication is staggering.

The material usage required to sustain this cycle — over years and decades — far exceeds what would be necessary if products were designed for quality in the first place.

And this is where the illusion of sustainability begins.

Because if this underlying model of creation and production is not addressed, then sustainability initiatives layered on top of it are fundamentally compromised.

They may look good.
They may be well marketed.
They may generate positive headlines.

But they are built on a core dysfunction.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" create in form requires mastery.

Yet many spiritual and religious teachings emphasize transcendence of the body, of form, of the material world

— as if these were obstacles to outgrow or leave behind rather than the exact unique conditions you chose in order to be here.

It’s worth pausing here to examine the logic.

If consciousness wanted only transcendence, disembodiment, and escape from form, incarnation would be unnecessary.

There would be no need for bodies, for Earth, for time, for matter.

And yet here you are.

The spiritual and religious teachings that promote transcendence of form as the pinnacle of realization may, in fact, be discarding a critical part of your innate gift:

the ability to embody spirit with precision.

In this light, the glorification of enlightenment as departure from the body becomes questionable.

What if it is not liberation — but avoidance?

What if it is not awakening — but a refined form of escapism?

A spiritual path that teaches withdrawal rather than embodied mastery.

A path that values leaving over learning how to stay with sovereign grace.

Consider this lens instead:

the work of being human is not to escape form.

It is to become fluent in it.

To dance with it.

To create through it.

To express spirit in form with clarity, goodness, beauty, peace, and joy.

This is far more demanding than transcendence.

It requires responsibility.

It requires discernment.

It requires devotion.

It requires integrity.

It requires learning how to work with matter, with emotion, with thought, with energy — not as something to rise above, but as something to refine.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" trenches — day in and day out

— caring for life-and-death emergencies and critical conditions.

When someone arrives in crisis, none of the usual societal distinctions matter.

A brain is a brain.
An artery is an artery.

This is our shared humanity.

It does not matter what your race is.
It does not matter what your culture is.
It does not matter what religion you practice or what beliefs you hold.

When someone comes in with a critical life-threatening emergency, the body speaks a universal language.

It does not matter if you are homeless and pulled from the streets,

or if you are someone with a net worth in the millions or billions.

A brain is a brain.
An artery is an artery.
A stroke is a stroke.

The brain does not care about status.
Disease does not discriminate material wealth.

An aneurysm does not pause to consider your education level, your gender, your political beliefs, or your moral framework.

In the presence of the body, all of the societal markers fall away.

This is the great equalization.

In medicine, there is a moral and ethical obligation to treat the shared humanity — the shared vulnerability — that lives beneath all surface identities.

The body is where societal hierarchy dissolves.

It does not matter how many degrees someone has.
It does not matter how intelligent they are.
It does not matter how successful they appear to be.

If you do not have your health, none of these distinctions can compensate for the loss of your health.

This is what I have witnessed, repeatedly.

The consequences of disregarding the body and using it like a machine with replaceable parts rather than an invaluable gift.

When someone loses their health, everything else rearranges around this loss.

Careers pause.
Material wealth becomes secondary.
Beliefs are tested.
Illusions of control collapse.

Disease does not discriminate.
The body does not negotiate.

It simply responds to what it has been given with love and care — or neglected

— repeatedly, consistently, over time.

It’ll tolerate and adapt until the threshold — every brain and body has a threshold.

Health humbles us.

It reminds us that no amount of material accumulation can replace vitality.

That no ego identity can override biology.

That no external success can insulate us from the consequences of how we live in our bodies.

This is not meant to frighten.

It is meant to clarify.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" therapists, practitioners, and influencers alike reach for phrases like “studies show” or “according to neuroscience,” as if invoking science itself is enough to establish credibility.

But more often than not, those phrases function less as truth and more as marketing.

Because when you pause and ask a simple question —
Which study?
— the answer is often vague, indirect, or nonexistent.

Most of them couldn’t tell you where the science comes from — or whether it’s real and the quality of the data.

This matters.

Not because science is the only way of knowing — it isn’t —

but because misusing science erodes trust, clarity, and discernment.

And when people are seeking guidance for their health, nervous system, trauma, leadership, or inner life, clarity matters.

Recently, I read the following claim from an online learning platform:

“According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), the average person has 60,000 thoughts a day — 80% of which are negative.”

It sounds authoritative.
And yet it’s false.

No such NSF study exists.

The quote has no verified origin.

Even Dr. Fred Luskin — often cited — has publicly stated he never conducted a research study that yielded this statistic.

It’s been repeated so many times online by well-meaning coaches, therapists, and speakers that it began to sound true.

The number became “true” not because it was validated, but because it was repeated.

This is how trends masquerade as truth.

And when someone is guiding you

— your brain, your body, your psyche, your healing —

you deserve more than recycled language wrapped in scientific authority.

If someone claims their work is science-backed but cannot name the study, explain the data, or clarify what branch of science they’re referring to, that isn’t science.

It’s branding.

This isn’t about shaming practitioners or dismissing non-scientific ways of knowing.

In fact, the opposite is true.

There are multiple valid ways of knowing:
scientific,

experiential,

intuitive,

relational,

spiritual,

and more.

The issue arises when these ways of knowing are collapsed and blurred —
when science is invoked without rigor, or when authority is outsourced rather than examined.

Clarity requires that we don’t borrow authority where it doesn’t belong.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"

It allows you to discern between genuine evidence and persuasive storytelling, between truth and trend.

This discernment is what empowers you to make aligned choices

— not based on what sounds convincing, but on what is congruent, transparent, and trustworthy.

Trust is fundamental in any healing or growth journey.

And trust is built not through borrowed authority, but through honesty

— about what is known, what is not known, and where different forms of knowing apply.

In my own work, I hold science and non-ordinary knowing with equal respect

— but I do not confuse them.

Each stands on its own footing, with its own strengths and limits.

Discernment begins with asking better questions:

Where does this claim come from?

Can it be verified?

Is this evidence — or persuasion?

And does this person welcome inquiry, or deflect it?

The more you learn to separate real evidence from branded storytelling, the more grounded and aligned your growth becomes.

And eventually, something else begins to shift.

You stop unconsciously subscribing to the idea that “healing is a lifetime journey” — a subtle message that keeps you perpetually striving, perpetually fixing, perpetually incomplete.

Instead, you begin to thrive.

Truth doesn’t need to be trendy.

And alignment doesn’t require external validation.

It begins when you trust yourself enough to think clearly for yourself, question honestly, and choose responsibly — with integrity.

<p in the short term becomes unsustainable over time.

This is not because leaders lack intelligence, ambition, or drive.

It is because sensitivity has been mischaracterized as weakness, distraction, or inefficiency

— rather than recognized as a form of intelligence that requires training and stewardship.

Without mastery, many default to coping mechanisms instead of leadership.

They compartmentalize.

They numb.

They push through.

They shut down.

They dissociate.

And in doing so, they lose access to the very information that would allow wiser decisions to emerge.

Call to Remember

We are being called to remember something essential.

True leadership requires the cultivation of sensitivity at multiple levels:

cognitive

emotional

spiritual

energetic

Not as separate domains, but as integrated dimensions of perception.

Mastery of multidimensional sensitivity allows a leader to notice when something is off before metrics reveal it.

It makes it possible to:

sense misalignment,

anticipate unintended consequences,

and respond creatively rather than reactively.

Leadership rooted in this mastery is not about pleasing or accommodating.

It is about responsibility.

It is about holding a wider field of awareness so that decisions serve not only immediate outcomes, but the long-term health of people, organizations, and the collective.

This is the kind of leadership our systems are asking for now.

Not louder.
Not harder.
But more attuned — and more skilled in what attunement actually requires.

P.s. High achieving deeply caring leaders have unique challenges to accessing their sensitivities to be in service of self & others. I know because I’ve navigated these unique challenges myself and now guide others in similar shoes to dissect through these blockages. If this you’re a mission-driven deeply caring leader and this has sparked your interest to learn more, I invite you to

Apply For 1:1 Private Guidance

Thank you for reading More Than Neurosurgeon. This is a reader-supported publication.
